Students Receive Chancellor’s Award for Excellence

SUNY Plattsburgh seniors Maura Danehey, Rebecca Robbins, Nikki Schiebel and Kym Taylor have been selected as recipients of the State University of New York Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence.

Presented by SUNY Chancellor Nancy Zimpher this April in Albany, the award was created 16 years ago to recognize those students who have best demonstrated the integration of academic excellence with leadership, athletics, career achievement, community service or creative and performing arts.

“Students honored with the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence … truly embody the power of SUNY,” said Zimpher. Read more.

TV/Video Production Students Create Fake ID PSA for Local Stations

Last fall, SUNY Plattsburgh senior TV/video production students Alex Backstrom and Ryan Stillwaggon went to jail — to film.

Backstrom and Stillwaggon were producing a public service announcement urging minors not to use fake IDs. Backstrom uploaded the PSA to YouTube in February, and, with airtime funded by the Clinton County STOP-DWI program, the PSA is now running on local stations in addition to Plattsburgh State Television. Psychology Alumnus Earns Research Award

Joseph Lynch III thought there must be a mistake. The awards committee must have confused him with someone else.

But the committee hadn’t. He had, indeed, won the American Psychological Association’s 2013 Early Graduate Student Researcher Award. Read more.

Tax Prep Internship Prepares Accounting Students for Jobs

Hao Jiang ’11, like many people, thought taxes were dull — a “black and white” process, he called them. Then, he began his studies at SUNY Plattsburgh as an accounting major.

After completing his first tax class and hearing about an internship with Plattsbugh’s AARP Tax-Aide, his perspective started to change.

“The internship added color to the tax picture,” Jiang said. “Tax courses made more sense, and it made me want to continue learning about taxes.” Read more.

The Huffington Post gave a shout-out to 16 black fashion editors during February’s Fashion Week in New York City, and Rachel Hislop ’11 was among them.

The popular blog and online news source posted “16 Black Fashion and Beauty Editors You Should be Following During New York Fashion Week,” ranking Hislop, a style editor with GlobalGrind.com, along with editors from Allure, Ebony, Glamour and Essence magazines and websites, among others.
