Women's Hockey Cruises to Third National Title

Ali Vakos, Chelsea VanGlahn and Bridget Balisy combined for 11 points as the women's hockey team defeated the Norwich Cadets, 9-2, to earn the Cardinals’ third national crown in front of a crowd of 1,619 at the Stafford Ice Arena Saturday, March 27.

With the win, the Cardinals finished the season with a 28-1-1 record and claimed their first title since 2008 Read more.

Granting a Wish: 6-year-old Receives Gifts from Hockey Team, Make A Wish Foundation

All he wanted was a PlayStation 4 — what he got was a night all about him, one he’ll never forget.

A year and a half into his battle with acute lymphoblastic leukemia, 6-year-old Plattsburgh resident Matthew Wood had his dreams come true thanks to the collaboration between the Northeast New York chapter of the Make-A-Wish Foundation and the Plattsburgh State men’s hockey team. Read more.

Preserving the Past, Understanding the Present: Student Studies Alzheimer’s Patients’ Stories

Before the 2013-2014 academic year, senior Erin Burdick knew “nothing” about Alzheimer’s. Now, after working on a project through a Chapel Hill Foundation Fellowship, she will present on the disease 4:30 p.m. April 25 in the Alumni Conference Room of SUNY Plattsburgh’s Angell College Center.

Burdick’s presentation, the “Plattsburgh Alzheimer’s Project: Memories of Work and Play,” uses stories and test results she gathered in meetings with three Alzheimer’s patients and their families at SUNY Plattsburgh’s Third Age Adult Day Center. She investigated which memories were more vivid to the patients — memories of work or memories of play — and whether the patients responded better to stories or photos. Read more.

Physics Student Lands Internship at Department of Energy’s Argonne National Laboratory

Physics major Cole Martin beat 800 other applicants for a chance to work alongside some of the world’s most talented scientists as they study particle physics.

The senior, from Morrisonville, N.Y., was one of 10 students chosen for the Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internship at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Argonne National Laboratory near Chicago. Read more.

This Valentine’s Day, SUNY Plattsburgh’s Physics Club used a new technology to romance the campus and raise money to help critically ill children attend camp.

Club members used the college’s new 3-D printer to make plastic roses, which they sold as a fundraiser for the Double H Ranch — a camp in Lake Luzerne that specializes in programs to help children dealing with life-threatening illnesses. Read more.
