College, CVPH Help RNs Earn Bachelor’s Degrees

Thirty-one years ago, Carol Brown knew the shortest line between points A and RN was a two-year degree. Today, she’s moving from RN to B.S. in as straight a line as before, only she’s doing it from the comfort of her own workplace.

Brown is one of 20 registered nurses at CVPH Medical Center in Plattsburgh taking advantage of a new joint initiative between SUNY Plattsburgh and the hospital. The venture helps working nurses earn their bachelor’s degree without leaving the hospital grounds. Read more.

Alumnus is “Rising Star: Top 40 Under 40”

When David DeCancio’s parents fled Cuba in 1962, they did so with the hope of finding freedom and opportunity.

They came to the United States with just a suitcase of clothes, barely speaking a word of English, and left behind all that they knew. His father worked three jobs to get by — roofing during the day, cleaning offices at night and working part-time in a print shop. His mother volunteered at the school and went on to start a teacher's aide union.

That family history now informs what DeCancio, himself, does. As the deputy director of communications and information services for the New York State Assembly, he strives to make this a better state. Read more.


Brain Gain — Making a Difference Through the North Country Scholarship

North Country businesses and individuals are helping to keep some of the area’s best and brightest right here at home.

They are doing so by contributing to the North Country Scholarship Program — a fund that makes attendance at SUNY Plattsburgh an even more affordable option for students from Clinton, Essex, Franklin and Hamilton counties. This academic year alone, 19 students received nearly $43,000 through this program. Read more.
